What is Tatkal Passport Service?

Tatkal (meaning "immediate" in Hindi) is India's fast-track passport service, allowing eligible applicants to receive their passport in 1–3 working days after police verification, rather than the standard 30+ day process. It was introduced by the MEA for citizens with genuine urgent travel requirements.

Who is Eligible for Tatkal?

Tatkal service is available for both fresh passport applications and re-issuance (renewal). You do not need to provide a specific reason for urgency for most applications. However, the additional Tatkal fee applies to all Tatkal applicants regardless of reason.

Tatkal Fees (2026)

Application TypeBase FeeTatkal SurchargeTotal
Adult — 36 pages, 10yr₹1,500₹2,000₹3,500
Adult — 60 pages, 10yr₹2,000₹2,000₹4,000
Minor — 36 pages, 5yr₹1,000₹2,000₹3,000

These fees are paid directly to the Government of India. DocsSeva India's document review fee is separate.

Documents Required for Tatkal

In addition to the standard passport documents (Aadhaar, address proof, photographs), Tatkal applications require:

  • Annexure F — Declaration by applicant (self-declaration form, prescribed by MEA). Must be on plain white paper, not notarised for self-declarations.
  • Verification certificate from a gazetted government officer OR a certificate from a Member of Parliament / State Legislature, if applicable
  • All supporting documents as per normal passport application
💡 Critical tip: Annexure F must be filled in correctly and signed by the applicant themselves. Any error in this form — wrong date format, incorrect wording, or missing fields — can cause the Tatkal application to be downgraded to normal processing. Our document review service specifically checks this annexure.

Tatkal Process Step by Step

  1. Log in to the Passport Seva portal and select application type
  2. Select "Tatkal" scheme when prompted during form filling
  3. Pay the combined fee (base + Tatkal surcharge) online
  4. Book a Tatkal appointment slot at your nearest PSK — Tatkal slots are separate from normal slots and fill up quickly
  5. Arrive at PSK with all originals, self-attested copies, and Annexure F
  6. Police verification — may be conducted as post-police-verification (PV) under Tatkal if documents are in order
  7. Passport dispatched within 1–3 working days of police verification clearance

Common Tatkal Application Mistakes

  • Annexure F filled incorrectly or unsigned
  • Using photocopied/printed annexure from old format (MEA updates formats)
  • Photographs not meeting ICAO biometric standards
  • Aadhaar details not matching existing passport
  • Address proof expired or not matching PSK jurisdiction address
